IWEPLET is over
From 16.-17.September, the EuroPLOT project organised the International Workshop on EuroPLOT Persuasive Technology for Learning, Education and Teaching (IWEPLET) 2013 in Paphos (Cyprus), in conjunction with the EC-TEL conference.
The workshop was divided into two parts: on the first day the focus was on the EuroPLOT project itself, with individual presentations of the work package leaders. The workshop was opened by Janet Finlay who gave an account about how the EuroPLOT project was established in 2009/2010 and how the team came together in preparing the proposal to the EACEA. It was then followed by presentations given by members of the EuroPLOT team. The talks covered the theoretical foundations, the tool development, the implementation of persuasive design in four case studies, and the evaluation of the results. A discussion with an outlook followed. Unfortunately BJ Fogg was not able to appear online as originally scheduled.
The second day was devoted to papers which showed work with scope beyond EuroPLOT. Presenters came from as far as Canada and Ghana. There were 11 papers presented, covering Persuasive Design, Assessment and Learning Success, Technologies, and Application Domains.
The proceedings are available online: on the website http://www.iweplet2013.eu/program are links to the whole proceedings volume, as well as to individual papers.

PLOTLearner is now available online with a learning journey and repurposed Hebrew language learning!
Follow the latest news on PLOTLearner at http://bh.3bmoodle.dk/. During September EuroPLOT offers access to an online repurposed version of PLOTLearner for evaluation. To get a login account you will be obliged to complete the post-test online survey for EuroPLOT on Friday noon September 27 at the very latest!
The new online version is called Bible Online Learner. After login, learners will have access to statistics on their progress in their Learning Journey Online and they will learn in a new reusable course developed in PLOTMaker.

CURRENT WORK
As of September 1, we are releasing the all but version on PLOTLearner 3 for deployment and evaluation at the University of Copenhagen and for use by other interested test persons. We now have an online login access which will continue to be available after the end of EuroPLOT in October.
The German Bible Society in Stuttgart will in collaboration with Nicolai Winther-Nielsen and 3BM offer a license to use the full Hebrew Bible database which is under continued development at the Eep Talstra Centre for Bible and Computer (ETCBC) at the Vrije Universiteit under the direction of Professor Wido T. van Peursen. We expect that access to this new database will be available on terms which promote affordable global learning in Asia and Africa for the PC as well as on the internet.
EuroPLOT programmer Claus Tøndering has worked without funding for the last year and developed the Bible Online Learner http://bibleol.3bmoodle.dk/ which is accessible online for smart phones and tablets. We offer login access for individuals as well as for classes in collaboration with fellow Hebrew teachers and institutions. We want to assist colleagues in repurposing this system to their own teaching in any way they may wish.
THREE AALOBORG STUDENTS
Claus Tøndering and Nicolai Winther-Nielsen are collaborating with a team of students who are currently working on projects on persuasive learning in their studies of Information Architecture and Human Computer Interaction at Aalborg University.
The first Aalborg University student: Judith Gottschalk has now under the supervision of Claus Tøndering and Nicolai Winther-Nielsen developed proficiency statistics for the Learning Journey Online. The scores of the learners reflect how many right answers a student has in exercises per minute, but it reduces this score by a calculation of the average of mistakes.
Nicolai Winther-Nielsen has planned this module through test data from 78 students involved in tests carried out in collaboration with EuroPLOT’s Associate Partner in Madagascar, the Lutheran Graduate School of Theology (SALT), and funded by Danmission.
In her next project, Judith Gottschalk will work on adding user levels and graphical display of the learning journeys. We are also now heading towards a more sophisticated recommender system which can guide students individually through automated learning proposals.
The second Aalborg University student: Christian Højgaard Jensen has over the past three months developed a new course which repurposes the 12 sessions developed by Nicolai Winther-Nielsen for EuroPLOT and tested in a class at Fjellhaug International University College Denmark.
He was the top student in the group testing PLOTLearner 2 in the Autumn of 2012, and is now using EuroPLOTs PLOTMaker to develop a new 12 session course which integrates the repeated testing approach developed by EuroPLOT’s Associate Partner, Nava Bergman, Gothenburg University.
The second Aalborg University student: Mikael Grønhøj Skovgård is currently researching gamification for his Master thesis and will graduate in the Autumn of 2013. The team wish to research principles from game design to enhance the persuasive force of the learning system
FUTURE PLANS
At present all future plans depend on the engagement by a team of unfunded collaborators who will continue to work on open source development.
Associate Professor of Hebrew Bible at Fjellhaug International University College Denmark is planning to develop online Learning Objects for the Bible Online Learner in a new project. Researcher Oliver Glanz of the Vrije Universiteit is also exploring collaboration on development for a new kind of exgesis.
We will present our plans and new ideas at the Society of Biblical Literature Annual Meeting in Baltimore in November 23, 2013. Researchers involved in biblicalhumanities.org will invite fellow researchers to a consultation in Baltimore on November 22.
Through the software company 3BM, the team hopes eventually to be able to generate some funding from sale of licenses and courses. We also continue to seek funding and collaboration in new projects.

The rationale of this program is the following:
The first day will be devoted to the EuroPLOT project itself. We will explain the motivation for this research and collaboration project, will show the four case studies, and will demonstrate the tools. At the end of the day BJ Fogg will joint us through Skype for a discussion about "Persuasive Technology".
The second day will then show related work in the field of "Persuasive Technology" for Learning, Teaching, and Education. It will be concluding with a discussion about persuasive learning and the outlook of this technology.

Research and development of "Persuasive Technology" has in the past decade gained significant attention. One of the goals of this research is to understand the basic principles of persuasion and to harness their power. In the fields of education and teaching, persuasion is an important aspect which human tutors are using for motivation and learning. The development of technology which allows unsupervised learning without direct interaction with a human tutor, will need to implement such principles of persuasion in order to be successful.
This workshop aims to bring together experts and stakeholders in the realm of technology-based teaching and learning, who have developed tools or learning objects based on persuasive principles, or who are simply interested in discussing how to use persuasive principles in the development and application of technology-enhanced learning. This workshop will present latest research results related to teaching and learning technology, specifically addressing and utilising persuasive principles. It will host sessions with technical/scientific peer-reviewed papers, keynote presentations, technology workshops with hands-on demonstrations of persuasive teaching/learning technology, poster sessions, and a panel discussion on the outlook and the future of persuasive technology. Furthermore, it will provide a venue for networking with peers and domain experts.

For the scientific/technical sessions, we are seeking high-quality contributions which are addressing one or more of the following topics:
Theory and methodology of persuasive design.
Persuasive technology as basis for new learning.
Persuasive learning objects.
Case studies with persuasive technology.

Persuasive evaluation and tools.
These contributions can be presented as full papers (8-page) with significant novelty and contribution to knowledge, or as posters for new ideas/concepts that have not yet been fully tested, but that are valuable to the community. This webinar will focus on the following:
DHI is running a case study for the EuroPLOT EU funded project, developing resources for training vocational learners to understand regulations for exposure scenarios for chemical handling. The formulating industry has to deliver information on safe use of their products according to the EU regulations, and trainees are highly motivated in learning how to comply. The challenges come with the obligation to gather and deliver information for several chemicals, and learning how to work with the information in an operational manner.
The new version of the GLO/PLOTMaker tool developed within the EuroPLOT project has an increased capability for producing learning objects based on persuasive principles. It allows the teacher to create persuasive learning elements in multiple ways aiming to engage the learner or trainee.

This webinar will focus on the following:
- How to work with persuasion motivating the trainee in a context where a legal obligation is setting the agenda.
- How to apply the new GLO/PLOTMaker tool for development of on-line training in developing exposure scenarios for chemical mixtures according to the EU regulation REACH.
DHI is running a case study for the EuroPLOT EU funded project, developing resources for training vocational learners to understand regulations for exposure scenarios for chemical handling. The formulating industry has to deliver information on safe use of their products according to the EU regulations, and trainees are highly motivated in learning how to comply. The challenges come with the obligation to gather and deliver information for several chemicals, and learning how to work with the information in an operational manner.
The new version of the GLO/PLOTMaker tool developed within the EuroPLOT project has an increased capability for producing learning objects based on persuasive principles. It allows the teacher to create persuasive learning elements in multiple ways aiming to engage the learner or trainee.

The new PLOTLearner 2 for Hebrew language learning can now be used for online studies and exam!
You need to apply before October 1 2012 and you will be infomed about acceptance before the end of October. Online exam will be in late May or first part of June in 2013. Nicolai Winther-Nielsen from EuroPLOT will provide you with PLOTLearner, videos, course material and online support. PhD, coordinator of MA Programme - The Religious Roots of Europe Ehrensvärd at the University of Copenhagen will direct a fully indpendent and internationally valid certificate for 10 ECTS if you pass the online exam on Genesis 1, Deuteronomy 5-9 and Psalm 24.
This is also the ultimate test for PLOTLearner and we hope that fellow teachers will recommend this possilbility:
- Students at universities and schools with exchange agreement with Copenhagen University studying full-time at their school can upon prior agreement register for free. This is possible for students at Oslo University and Menighedsfakultetet in Norway, Lund and Uppsala universities in Sweden, Åbo Academy and Helsinki University in Finland and Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam as well as some other universities in Germany, England and Greece, and Makumira in Tanzania.Furthermore, full-time students at any more

You are allowed to use a dictionary, a grammar, and the Hebrew bible for the 30 minute preparation. There can't be any notes, such as translations, in the Bible text.
In addition, in Denmark there is always an external examiner involved in exams to make sure that everything is done by the book.

EuroPLOT is developing technology for persuasive learning from a text database such as the collected works of a writer like Danish playwrigth, poet and pastor Kaj Munk or a sacred text in an ancient language like the Hebrew Bible. The major part of the work to develop language learning for the Hebrew Bible is now being completed with the release of PLOTLearner 2 on July 26.On the same day we signed a contract with the German Bible Society which gives us the license to distribute some 20 % of the Hebrew Bible database as an open educational ressource. From now on we will focus on developing course material for scaffolding of the text with pictures, videos and textbook material and the system will be piloted in educational projects in Sweden and Madagascar in 2013.

PLOTLearner for Hebrew is a free and flexible tool for task-based language learning. With the release of the second prototype we have the almost final version of a new text-driven tutor for language learning and we can develop new perusasive learning objects for this new technology. Fellow teachers and interested students are able to try out the new technology and form their own opinion on whether they would like to join EuroPLOT and be part of new world-wide learning community from the summer of 2013:
Here are the learning ressources that we would like for you consider for use for Hebrew language learning and study of the Hebrew Bible:
- INSTALLATION OF TOOL: The PLOTLearner 2.0.0 is distributed from eplot.3bmoodle.dk and all future distributions will be available from this platform. We continue our proud tradition of agile development and around August 26 we will have a new download version to be used in an online course at Gothenburg University and for testing in Madgascar. The piloting version PLOTLearner 3 will be available at the end of the year.
- ONLINE RESSOURCES: PLOTLearner is a tutor which automatically scans for scaffolded learning objects to enable persuasive and appropiately timed motivational learning. The project has developed a flexible resource database which is available online at resources.3bmoodle.dk. At the moment it only contains a small selection of pictures, but in the project we will add thousands of images as well as videos and text documents. As the learner immerses in the text and learns through the user-friendly corpus interface he or she can click on texts, pictures, videos and screencaptures.
- OPEN SOURCE eLEARNING: As part of our strategy to promote free open educational ressources we are now constructing course material in the world's best and largest learning management system. We will be developing material in Moodle 2.3 at bh.3bmoodle.dk throughout the project period. We will support collaboration in a learning community based on Moodle, because we believe that this platoform will stay open and free, and thus be available for teaching in Majority world institutions.

EuroPLOT is the host of a serious of webinars whcih can be downloaded after the event. If you want to know more about how persuasive technology can improve mastery, control and purpose for learners studying Biblical Hebrew you can join us for an hour sometime in late August or September.
The date of the PLOTLearner webinar has not been settled yet. However workpackage leader Nicolai Winther-Nielsen will present the first results from class exprience in August at the Fjellahaug International University College Denmark and explain how the tool supports the learners. The programmer of PLOTLearner, Claus Tøndering will comment on technonlogical aspects of the tool and we will answer questions.

More on PLOTLearner
The initial development work of PLOTLearner has used a prestigeous Dutch corpus of the Hebrew Bible which has been under construction for more than 30 years by the Werkgroep Informatica of the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, or for short the WIVU database. This is the corpus for which the Stuttgart Electronic Bible Study, the SESB, was developed and marketed from 2003 and until recently, and it can be bought from Logos to work with PC, Mac and mobile devices.
By developing persuasive learning technology for one of the best linguistic databases of the Hebrew Bible in the World, we believe we can offer learning for masses of students who can never own a Bible software program, but are dedicated to the study of the Hebrew Bible as part of the indispensable Jewish and Christian canon of the Bible. We will be collaborating with the German Bible Society in Stuttgart which is the leading world publisher of texts sources for the study of the Bible, and we are grateful to have the license to use a significant part of the Hebrew Bible source text from this prominent society, and to serve our common mission. We hope to collaborate with Bible societies around the world to offer the Hebrew Bible for free or affordable outside the West and to help students in poor countries based on GDP principles.
By July 26 2012, EuroPLOT has completed the basic prototype for this new tool to learn Hebrew from a text. The tool now offer a new kind of learning, which is completely driven by a text database, yet fully controlled by the learner and his facilitator who can define their own goals for mastery and repurpose the tool any way they like. After the second prototype is being delivered by the end of July, we will focus on testing these new principles of persuasive language learning. From August and onwards we will implement the tool in teaching in Copenhagen, Gothenburg and Madagascar. Fellow scholars and teachers are cordially invited to experiment with the tool as a resource for teaching and they can use it freely in class from the Fall of 2013. The presentation will demonstrate the software and discuss its potential for Hebrew and other languages.
PLOTLearner
is developed for Hebrew and designed and tested for this case, but it
can already handle the Greek New Testament and we can demonstrate
learning from a German database. However, the tool can
be used for any text corpus in any language, and currently the Aalborg
Master student Judith Gottschalk is developing technology to prepare any
text as a database for use as a corpus for the PLOTLearner. Because all
development is open source we are expanding the range of
technology-enhanced persuasive language learning
in this project. Persuasive learning objects can be any text and texts
can be repurposed and integrated into learning management systems.In
this way we are expanding the emminent work by Aalborg University
researcher Ulrik Sandborg-Petersen who developed the Emdros database
management system (emdros.org) for Hebrew, Greek, and Munk corpora.

This has implications on the design of learning: It is not primarily the student who needs to be in the focus of learning design. Learning design needs to develop a better focus on real learning outcomes, when practical achievements and student engagement should be assured. This has implications on the design of the curriculum, educational programme and/or assessments.
In this online presentation, the notion of output oriented learning design will be explained. The presenter discusses learning outcomes from different perspectives, explains the relevance of didactic variety in education, and provides methodological backgrounds.

This free webinar provides an overall introduction to the approach taken to Persuasive Design at Aalborg University. Persuasive Design is based on perspectives introduced by BJ Fogg when he defined the term Persuasive Technologies, but draws upon elements from classic humanistic traditions in the process of defining a theoretical foundation which may facilitate future research and development within the field. The webinar will give a general introduction to persuasive design, and address some of the challenges of combining this particular approach to computer mediated communication with the more established field of Digital Learning.

EuroPLOT at DeLFI 2011
| A presentation of EuroPLOT was made at DeLFI 2011 conference in Dresden, Germany, and a short paper published in the conference book. The poster outlines of the main outcomes and the methodology of the project. In the presentation we demonstrated the value of persuasive design principles, referring in detail to some of Fogg's principles, and we discussed the impact that it can have on the design of learning resources and learning technologies. The feedback received from the participants was positive and confirmed an interest in the new innovative design approach that EuroPLOT is aiming to realise. Publication of interest for persuasive Hebrew learning
A fresh publication from Brill in Leiden has two articles of special interest in relation to the Emdros databases used in the EuroPLOT. Ulrik Sandborg-Petersen describes how he developed the Emdros database management system. Nicolai Winther-Nielsen describes a part of the prehistory of the EuroPLOT in so far as it evolved from experimental work on learning technology and linguistic research based on the Emdros database of the Hebrew Bible.
The new book Tradition and Innovation in Biblical Interpretation. Studies Presented to Professor Eep Talstra on the Occasion of his Sixty-Fifth Birthday (Studia Semitica Neerlandica), edited by Wido Th. van Peursen and Janet W. Dyk (http://www.brill.nl/tradition-and-innovation-biblical-interpretation#DESREAD_1), celebrates the work of professor of Old Testament and Bible and Computing&Humanities Eep Talstra. Pioneering innovative corpus-driven research of the Hebrew Bible in 1977, he started developing pascal programs at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, and then established the Werkgroep Informatica research project which developed syntactic programs for linguistic analysis of the Hebrew Bible. This innovate corpus-driven research has had many valuable applications, including persuasive learning from annotated text corpora.
The first article is Ulrik Sandborg-Petersen's "On Biblical Hebrew and Computer Science: Inspiration, Models, Tools, and Cross-Fertilization", p. 261-276: He traces the history behind the database of the Werkgroep Informatica of the Vrije Universiteit (WIVU) through the 1994 dissertation of Crist-Jan Doedens. Sandborg-Petersen's prize winning dissertation from 2008 developed the Hebrew Bible database into an Emdros database in a Aalborg University project on the collected works of pastor, poet and playwright Kaj Munk, and this database is used in the EuroPLOT.
The second article is Nicolai Winther-Nielsen's "Persuasive Hebrew Exercises: The Wit of Technology-Enhanced Language Learning", p. 277-298: Tracking the role of learning technology in Hebrew language learning courses, it describes how several of Ulrik Sandborg-Petersen's programs were used in course development since 2004. These programs are now developed into the commercial Paradigms Master Pro as well as the open source grammar and syntax tool Linguistic Tree Constructor. This experimental work also formed the core in a partner project with programmer Claus Tøndering who developed the Ezer Emdros-based Exercise Tool - 3ET, using the Emdros database of the Hebrew Bible for generating random exercises for language learners. The 3ET is now developed into EuroPLOT's PLOTLearner tool for persuasive language learning.
